Jewels of Royalty: Engagement Rings

Have you ever wondered about the engagement rings of royalty? Despite the transition to democracy, Kings and Queens still exist in many nations. For royalty, an engagement often means something more than love and has many prerequisites. The engagement rings vary from intricate to minimalist styles, each with a unique backstory detailing their creation. We curated a selection of 5 of the most exquisite royal engagement rings.

5. Princess Victoria of Sweden
This elegant white gold ring with a round brilliant-cut diamond in a solitaire setting is simple yet promising. In 2009, Daniel Westling presented Princess Victoria of Sweden with the ring as a symbol of their engagement. While most of us see this engagement ring as ordinary, this ring broke Swedish tradition. The usual tradition for royal couples is to exchange a simple gold ring to mark an engagement. It is assumed that the engagement ring of Princess Victoria is the work of the official court jeweller Bolin.

4. Princess Beatrice of York
Princess Beatrice’s ring is a stunning 3.5-carat round diamond inspired by the Art-Deco design. The ring is also set with tapered baguettes on each side of the centre stone. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, her then fiancé, collaborated with designer Shaun Leane on the ring and chose natural diamonds. He understood that only natural diamonds would be suitable for an engagement to a Princess. For him, the natural diamonds represented love and commitment.

3. Queen Consort Mary of Denmark
A beautiful emerald-cut diamond ring flanked by two ruby baguettes was bestowed by Crown Prince Frederik to Mary in 2003. The pair met during the 2000 Summer Olympics and married in 2004. The engagement ring symbolised the colours of the Danish flag which is a special sentiment. Mary sports a stunning 18-carat white gold ring adorned with 24 square princess-cut diamonds, in addition to her engagement ring.

2. Princess Diana of Wales

The stunning white gold ring with a 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire in a cluster setting of 14 solitaire diamonds was late Princess Diana’s engagement ring. She picked it out herself from a Garrard catalogue. In 1981 the value of this beautiful engagement ring was around £28,500 but today it is priceless. Prince William, the son of Diana, proposed to Kate Middleton with his mother’s ring and The Duchess of Cambridge still wears it today.

1. Queen of the United Kingdom Elizabeth II

The late Queen’s engagement ring has a fascinating story about its creation. The ring is a three-carat round diamond ring, with a centre stone adorned by ten smaller diamonds set in pavé. In 1946, Prince Philip planned to propose to Elizabeth. His mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg gifted him the tiara she was given on her wedding day. Together with London jeweller Philip Antrobus the prince worked on dismantling the tiara and designed the engagement ring for his Queen. Additionally to the engagement ring, Prince Philip selected additional stones from the tiara and turned it into a wedding gift, a diamond bracelet.
