One of the oldest and most renowned crafts the Swiss are known for, is watchmaking. Along with the Netherlands, Switzerland was known to be the best country where watches would be manufactured. Watchmaking history is a long one, one that is ingrained in the culture and tradition. This tradition was very popular in the country but its popularity was reinforced when Calvinism came into place. The rules that Calvinism established in the country, did not allow the production and wearing of jewellery. This led many jewellers to convert their businesses into the closest thing they could think of: watchmaking. Just like in today’s world, the more competition there is for one product, the more the drive to innovate one product more and more in order for it to be unique and at the top of its game. It was the willingness for the craftsmen to stand out, that brought out the quality, beauty and intricate designs we all know and love.
